Bear Lake Wilderness Lodge is located on the eastern side of the Mississippi Flyway. In the fall, thousands of ducks come down from the far north after spending the summer getting fat on the rich tundra. They still have hundreds of mile to go after their stopover on Bear Lake and other lakes in the area.
The weedy and sheltered bays of Bear Lake attract great numbers of ducks. Duck hunters are attracted to this area because duck meat taste so much better when you get them in the north. By the time they get down south, their fat reserves are gone and their meat has toughened up.
